Australian Women’s Weekly Digitisation Project

Can you help?

About the project

In the 2009/2010 financial year the National Library of Australia will digitise and make publicly available the Australian Women’s Weekly, from 10 June 1933 to 15 December 1982 (from inception to when the magazine changed frequency to monthly), which incorporates the first 50 years of the magazine. The project is undertaken in association with the publisher of the Australian Women’s Weekly, Australian Consolidated Press and with the State Library of New South Wales.

As part of the Australian Women’s Weekly digitisation project, the National Library of Australia has checked its holdings to identify any missing issues and seeks public support to fill these gaps. Do you have any old Australian Women’s Weekly issues in your shed or under the bed? If you do, you may be able to help us preserve as many of the issues as possible for future generations. The issues required by the NLA are listed here. If you have any of these missing issues or would like to discuss this further please contact during business hours-

Email: jwhiting@nla.gov.au

Alternatively, you can send the issues via post (no stamp required) -

The Australian Women’s Weekly will be digitised by scanning and Optical Character Recognition (OCR) processing. Approximately 200,000 images will be keyword searchable through a search and delivery system which will be developed in-house and based on the Australian Newspapers Digitisation Program system.

Manager, Serials Branch

Progress reports will be added to this page regularly.

Any queries about this project can be emailed to awwproject@nla.gov.au.

The Australian Women’s Weekly was first published in June 1933 and soon after rose to be one of Australia’s top selling magazines. When it was first published the magazine appealed to a broad readership as it not only included articles of particular interest to women but also stories and opinion pieces on Australian and world events, such as the rise of Nazism and the treatment of indigenous Australians. The articles, editorials, letters to the editor, advertisements, illustrations and photographs contained in the Australian Women’s Weekly offer a unique insight into the social fabric of Australia throughout the 20th century.

This project will function as a test-bed to inform the development of an ongoing, large-scale journal and book digitisation program for the Library.

5 million and counting

To staff at the library it sometimes feels as if there are millions of items being borrowed and returned. Well it’s official. Today Port Macquarie Library issued its five millionth item since opening in January 2000. To mark the occassion the lucky borrower, Patricia Bain, received a small gift from the library manager.  Interestingly, the item in question was a DVD, which was very much a new technology back then and not available in libraries.

Here’s a taster:

D-Day : The Battle for Normandy          By Antony Beevor

Anthony Beevor

I’m not sure why I chose to read this book at Christmas. Psychologists would have a field day with the concept of ‘invasion’ I’m sure. Be that as it may, since reading ‘Stalingrad’ by the same author some time ago I was interested to view his assessment of this pivotal battle in world history. If you haven’t read Beevor’s accounts before his strength is being able to construct a narrative which includes both the strategic ambitions, successes and failures of the commanders with the day to day struggles of their troops. He manages to do this without fear of stepping on the reputations of the ‘great’ generals from both sides of the conflict which were often built from the heroism and sacrifice of those under their command rather than their ability to plan and direct. In addition to this he includes the experiences of the civilians, more of whom were killed from allied bombing and shelling in Normandy than died in the London blitz.  The title is misleading in that the scope of the book is much wider than the single day of June 6th – it is really a description of the campaign that culminated in the surrender of Paris. On the whole, I preferred Beevor’s book on the battle for Stalingrad but would certainly recommend this book for those interested in history.

Who Else Writes Like…

Who else writes like

Do you like Michael Connelly but have read all of his books?

Maybe it’s Di Morrissey and she just doesn’t write books fast enough for you.

Well why not try our Who Else Writes Like lists.

These lists have been put together by staff to help you find authors who write similarly to your favourite author.  They are located on the back wall in Adult Fiction.

We hope these lists will help you to find a new favourite author to read.

(P.S. – if you have any suggestions for Who Else Writes Like lists, please let library staff know, and we will do our best to help you)

Bali assignment

We have noticed a huge interest in Bali from primary school students in the area. Most of the books the library owns are already out on loan, so we thought we’d provide some alternatives.

Please see the attached document for information and further links on Indonesia and Bali from sites such as The National Library of Australia, The World Fact Book and the Library of Congress (to name just a few).

The reference collection at Port Macquarie has the World Book Encyclopedia of People and Places and the Junior Worldmark Encyclopedia of the Nations available for photocopying.
