As children’s and YA author, he has written two book series’, Mac Slater Coolhunter and also the Nitboy series. He brings a wealth of experience to his writing and workshops. He says that he is always looking for ways to “meld my work with social action”.

This is also true of his filmmaking. His “Change the World in Five Minutes, Every Day at School” is a dynamic short film produced for SBS TV and Film Australia. It follows a class of year five and six children as they spend the first five minutes of every day at school taking action to change the world in positive ways.

“It’s about getting fired up and doing something about the state of your community and the planet. I hope that the film will spark a mini-revolution in our schools”.

Students and our community are sure to be entertained and inspired by Tristan Bancks visit.

Travelling Pants

Brian Matthews was awarded $20,000 for his work, Manning Clark: A Life.

The judges praised it as a “brilliant biography” because it relied heavily on Clark’s diaries.

Clark died in 1991 and his six-volume A History of Australia was three decades in the making.

Receiving the National Biography Award in Sydney, Matthews said it took him 10 years to write and he was surprised to be named the winner.

The library holds two copies of this book.

D-Day : The Battle for Normandy          By Antony Beevor

I’m not sure why I chose to read this book at Christmas. Psychologists would have a field day with the concept of ‘invasion’ I’m sure. Be that as it may, since reading ‘Stalingrad’ by the same author some time ago I was interested to view his assessment of this pivotal battle in world history. If you haven’t read Beevor’s accounts before his strength is being able to construct a narrative which includes both the strategic ambitions, successes and failures of the commanders with the day to day struggles of their troops. He manages to do this without fear of stepping on the reputations of the ‘great’ generals from both sides of the conflict which were often built from the heroism and sacrifice of those under their command rather than their ability to plan and direct. In addition to this he includes the experiences of the civilians, more of whom were killed from allied bombing and shelling in Normandy than died in the London blitz.  The title is misleading in that the scope of the book is much wider than the single day of June 6th – it is really a description of the campaign that culminated in the surrender of Paris. On the whole, I preferred Beevor’s book on the battle for Stalingrad but would certainly recommend this book for those interested in history.

Jeremy Tarbox will be talking at Kempsey Library about his experiences in Guatemala, where he volunteered for 10 weeks with an agricultural cooperative, living in indigenous communities focusing on organic production. He will discuss the experience of village living and the 3 projects he completed on seed harvesting, village attitudes to seed sovereignty and the documentation of the production processes for their crops.

 About the speaker: A former student of Melville High School, Jeremy has a Chemical Engineering degree and has recently returned to Kempsey. He has been selected as a Rotary World Peace Fellow to study a masters Degree in Argentina during 2010 and 2011 focusing on International Development.
