Extraordinary pieces of Port Macquarie’s history from the Macquarie era will be revealed publicly for the first time at Port Macquarie Library on Thursday 20 May 2010. The State Library of NSW, in partnership with Westpac Bank, is celebrating the bicentenary of the governorship of Lachlan Macquarie by touring a selection of amazing documents and historic artefacts to 10 regional areas of NSW, many of which Macquarie visited. There’ll be readings from the original Macquarie journals and the new Roe letters. John Septimus Roe (1797-1878) was Phillip Parker King’s right-hand man on four major voyages (Mermaid and Bathurst) from 1817 to 1823. His personal letters (201 in total) reveal in rare detail new information about colonial society and its major players, including the Macquaries. Paul Brunton, Senior Curator at the State Library will give public talks at 10am and 2pm and share little-known insights about the state’s fifth and longest serving colonial governor who turned a penal colony into a free society. On Wednesday 19th May at 9.45 a.m, local author Charles Granquist will be be talking about his book “A Long Way Home” This is the story of his enlistment during World War II at the age of seventeen, his capture and imprisonment by the Germans and his numerous escape attempts. This account of his wartime experiences adds another important chapter to the story of Australian POWs

All are welcome to this free event. Morning tea will be provided and copies of his book will be available for purchase.

We had had a wonderful afternoon in Port library last Sunday with an array of colourful manga characters taking to the stage. I am now thinking I will have to read the deathnote books as so many characters came from this series. Along with the cosplay we had wii games, a manga drawing competition & the hardest of all moving m’n'ms with chopsticks! Port Macquarie Library is 10 years old!!

On Wednesday 14th April, Port Macquarie Library will be celebrating 10 years in our current building.

We will be partying throughout the day with a cafe in the library and live music provided by some very talented young local artists from 11.00am.

There will also be activities for the kids, with Wii sports available all day, and in the Library Meeting Room, you can design your own library bag (bookings are essential for the library bag activity – contact the library on 6581 8755)

New fiction, non-fiction, DVDs and CDs will be on show for you to browse through and borrow from 10.30am.

The Lions Club will be providing a Sausage Sizzle out the front of the Library from 12.00pm until 2.00pm.

So come on down to Port Macquarie Library on Wednesday 14th April and join the library staff in celebrating 10 wonderful years in a fantastic building.

5 million and counting

To staff at the library it sometimes feels as if there are millions of items being borrowed and returned. Well it’s official. Today Port Macquarie Library issued its five millionth item since opening in January 2000. To mark the occassion the lucky borrower, Patricia Bain, received a small gift from the library manager. Interestingly, the item in question was a DVD, which was very much a new technology back then and not available in libraries.

Travelbugs - a travelling bug show, Thursday 15^th April at Port Macquarie Library – a fun interactive workshop for 5-12 year olds

Beautiful & Beastly Bugs – National Parks & Wildlife workshops at Wauchope (Thursday 8^th April) and Laurieton (Friday 16^th April) Libraries, suitable for kinder to year 4

We have noticed a huge interest in Bali from primary school students in the area. Most of the books the library owns are already out on loan, so we thought we’d provide some alternatives.

Please see the attached document for information and further links on Indonesia and Bali from sites such as The National Library of Australia, The World Fact Book and the Library of Congress (to name just a few).

The reference collection at Port Macquarie has the World Book Encyclopedia of People and Places and the Junior Worldmark Encyclopedia of the Nations available for photocopying.
