For sixty four years, the Children’s Book Council of Australia has celebrated Australian Children’s Literature. Each year, judges select a short list of finalists in a variety of different categories. These categories are Book of the Year for: Older Readers, Younger Readers and Early Childhood. There is also Picture Book of the Year (for 0 to 18years) and the Eve Pownall Award for Information Books.
Covers are featured as part of the displays at our three libraries and reviews for all titles are available. This year’s Short List showcases the wonderful skills and talents of Australian writers. We are very proud to say that three of the authors have visited our libraries – Morris Gleitzman, Matt Ottley and John Marsden.
Library staff will be visiting schools and hosting visits so some books will not be available until after Book Week (24th August to 28th August). The theme for this year’s Book Week is “Book Safari” and you are invited to decorate a lid (yes, any type or style of lid) using this year’s theme. Entries will need to be in by Friday 21st August at your nearest library. Any age can enter and entries will be on display during Book Week….lots of prizes.
The Short List will give every reader something to enjoy. These books are not just for kids! In fact, some are definitely suited to adult audiences. Text is presented in a variety of formats with one book telling its story via pictures only. These books will give you something to think about and take away from your reading.
We are incredibly fortunate to have such talented Australian authors. Let us know what you think about the Short List!
